Bharatnatyam and Me

Bharatanatyam is not merely an Art form one learns for the sake of learning. It is a journey to a greater Learning. As I began to dance more the meaning of Bharatanatyam changed for me. Bharatanatyam to me is not just a movement, and it is not about attaining perfect symmetry or drawing lines. Aesthetically it is all that, but for me it is much more than that. For me it is a medium to channel all my emotions. Through Bharatanatyam I can show my emotions which otherwise I feel like I have built a shield around them. I also see it as an art of storytelling. When you read these stories or know the characters, they kind of become embedded in our own emotional landscape and help shape you as a person. The world of Bharatanatyam becomes another reality and a very personal identity.

Ever since I was a child, I had a natural gravitation towards classical dance forms. I say this because I remember when I was a child I would come back from school and diligently watch a TV program on Doordarshan showcasing classical dances. If there was a song playing on a TV, I would get up and dance randomly. My dad used to reminisce these movements much later on too. I was also recognized by my school principal and she called my parents to school and said that I should be a trained classical dancer. but at that point of time, I probably didn't have the strong conviction about it hence didn't pursue it. Maybe these kinds of small incidents etched in me and much later on it became my passion to pursue it. Honestly at that point in my life I didn't know the difference between Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi or any other classical dance forms. It's as if Bharatanatyam choose me rather than me choosing Bharatanatyam. Where I lived, most popular teachers were teaching Bharatanatyam. However, when I approached a local teacher in 2018, she refused to teach me because of my age (I was 34 at the time). But I'm very thankful for those rejections. If not for those rejections, I wouldn't have met my current Acharya Dr. Subashree Narayanan.

We all know it is very ancient classical Indian dance form. And I won't bore you with the definition of it. I found this interesting analogy online (source Mythili Prakash and project Shivoham) and I'm quoting them here.

'Bharatanatyam doesn’t just come with movement, vocabulary, repertoire, technique etc. It also comes with drama, mythology, philosophy, characters, emotions, relationships.'

It is a display of “Nava Rasa” (9 emotions). Bharatanatyam in conjunction with Sangeetham and Sahithyam is a medium for propagation of knowledge, which emotionally connects with the audience to impart a message. Message that will stick with Audience forever.
